What is PayFi?
PayFi is a loose label for combining payments with financial products. HedgerX uses it for Hedger Pay, a program linked to payment fees. The label does not say how a given program works or whether it is safe.
What the word covers
HedgerX describes PayFi as payments combined with digital asset use cases. Its company deck calls Hedger Pay “one of the PayFi applications within HedgerX’s multi-application ecosystem”, with payment scenarios, consumption scenarios, user benefits and ecosystem participation. The HedgerX Research note on TOKEN2049 Singapore says stablecoins and tokenised assets were among the hottest themes there, with cross-border settlement as a main use.
What to check for any PayFi product
- The payment side: who processes the payments, and is the volume independently reported?
- The finance side: does it promise fixed payouts, or set a cap, a lock or a withdrawal condition?
- The link between them: does the payout come from real payment fees or from new participants’ money?
- Exit terms: can you get your money back, and under what conditions?
For Hedger Pay, HedgerX says payouts rest on fees from PayWithCrypto payments. We have not yet confirmed the volumes it quotes. See Hedger Pay explained.
